Research
My research at Liverpool examined sperm DNA damage in men attending for initial fertility investigation. The finding — that a substantial proportion of men with a normal standard semen analysis nonetheless had significant DNA fragmentation — was presented at the ESHRE Annual Meeting in Milan in 2022. It shaped how I investigate couples labelled "unexplained": a normal semen report is not the same as normal sperm.
Earlier work includes a retrospective review of ectopic pregnancy management (AICOG, 2015) and a departmental audit of bowel injury in gynaecological surgery at Liverpool Women's Hospital.
How I practise
I see each patient myself, at each visit, including early-morning monitoring. I do not delegate the consultation to a coordinator.
I will tell you what I think your chances are in language you can use, and I will tell you when I think a treatment is unlikely to help. I would rather you make a decision with accurate information than continue a cycle because nobody said stop.
I take referrals of difficult cases — repeated failure, poor response, recurrent loss — and I treat them as a different clinical problem from a first cycle, because they are.
