Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy uses a narrow camera passed through the cervix to examine the inside of the uterus. It can be diagnostic, or used to treat selected problems during the same or a planned procedure.

Written by Dr Amber Aggrwal, MCh Reproductive Medicine (Hewitt Fertility Centre, Liverpool), DNB Obstetrics & Gynaecology. GMC 7724289 · Punjab Medical Council 43124 · Haryana Medical Council HN013500. Last reviewed: September 2026.

Why it is performed

Common reasons include abnormal bleeding, polyps, fibroids that project into the uterine cavity, adhesions, a uterine septum, or assessment after repeated implantation failure.

During and after the procedure

The setting and anaesthesia depend on what is planned. Mild cramping and light bleeding can occur afterwards. Your individual recovery advice and warning signs are discussed before discharge.

Clinical review

This newly drafted patient information requires Dr Amber Aggrwal's review. Whether hysteroscopy is useful depends on your symptoms, imaging and clinical history.
